Sometimes humor is how we survive the things that are anything but funny.

This shirt was created to make you smile for a second — but also to start a very serious conversation:

Cancer is expensive. Extremely expensive.

And the financial damage often goes far beyond the medical bills people see.

Cancer can mean missing work. Losing income. Paying for treatments, medications, supplements, transportation, gas, hotels, parking, special foods, comfortable clothing, childcare, and countless little expenses that somehow become enormous when they happen all at once. And God forbid the person needs to also care for their health with more of a holistic approach that insurance don’t cover!!

Bills that were always paid on time can suddenly fall behind.

Savings can disappear.

Credit cards start carrying things that used to come out of a checking account.

A credit score someone worked years to build can fall frighteningly fast to 500.

Sometimes there is literally a few dollars left in the bank account — while another appointment, prescription, or trip for treatment is already waiting.

Vacations get canceled.
Dinner out becomes a luxury.
Things you need get postponed.
Things your children or family need may have to wait.

And one of the hardest parts?

Having to ask for help.

There can be embarrassment in saying, “I can’t afford this right now.”

Especially when you were once the person helping everyone else.

And please remember something important:

Someone can look completely put together and still be struggling behind closed doors.

They may be dressed nicely.
They may be smiling.
They may still show up for their family.
They may tell you, “I’m okay.”

That does not necessarily mean they have everything under control.

Sometimes they are simply doing their best to hold everything together.

So if someone you love is going through cancer, please don’t always wait for them to ask.

Just help.

Start the GoFundMe for them.
Organize the raffle.
Put together the fundraiser.
Ask local businesses to donate items.
Bring groceries.
Buy the gas card.
Cover a hotel night near treatment.
Pay for dinner.
Help with childcare or transportation.
Gather friends and quietly take one burden off their shoulders.

Even a small amount of financial breathing room can mean so much more than money.

It can mean being able to take the family out for one special dinner and feel normal again.

It can mean taking the kids somewhere for the afternoon and making memories.

It can mean putting gas in the car without wondering which bill will have to wait.

It can mean one night of sleeping without doing math in your head.

And sometimes, it simply means being reminded:

“You are not doing this alone.”

This shirt uses humor because sometimes we desperately need to laugh.

But behind the joke is a message I hope people will hear:

Cancer patients don’t only need medical care. They need community. They need practical help. They need financial support. They need people who notice — and act.

So when you see someone going through cancer, don’t assume that because they haven’t asked, they don’t need anything.

Maybe instead of asking,

“Let me know if you need something…”

say,

“I already did something. This is for you.”

No explaining.
No embarrassment.
No asking them to prove they need it.

Just love.

Because cancer is expensive enough already.

I KNOW A VERY EXPENSIVE PERSON.

And behind that funny shirt is a person who may be carrying far more than you can see. ❤️
